The Pre-League Football Tournament match between Renown SC and Defenders SC, scheduled for yesterday at the Sugathadasa Stadium, was postponed after Renown SC coach and two other players were tested positive for COVID-19.
Due to this situation, they were requested to self isolate and a further PCR test will be conducted in six days to observe the status of them before they are cleared to play the cancelled fixture.
“The coach and the two players of Renown SC were tested positive for COVID-19 and as per the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines we were compelled to reschedule the match to a later date, Anura de Silva, President of SLF told the Daily News yesterday.
“Incidents of this nature tend to occur and for which they have to be isolated. The next PCR test in six days will give us an indication whether these players and officials are cleared for the pandemic and depending on that report they could proceed to play the match,” a senior doctor of the MOH said.
“Sports in the country should be conducted with the day-to-day activities. We can’t reject the requests of the sporting bodies due to this new variant,” he further added.
Meanwhile, New Youngs SC and Sea Hawks SC drew 1-1 in Wednesday’s second match of the day played at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
