Swimmer and Athlete Warnakulasuriya Mishell Saumya Fernando brought honour and fame to her Alma Mater Dankotuwa Balika Vidyalaya . She was admitted to the Grade One of this school in 2009.

When she was in the Primary School she took part in the School Inter House Sports Meets and won places. Her events were 50 and 100 metres and after performing well she participated in the Divisional Meets but could not win places in the Zonal Meets.

When she was in Grade Eight her parents Raju Manoj Fernando and Krishanthi Priyadarshani encouraged her to take up to swimming and admitted her to a private swimming academy at Nainamadama and she came under Ranil Peiris, Awantha Geethadewa and Kingsley Kumara and underwent training seriously. Her first swimming meet was Puttalam District Meet and in the Butterfly 100 metres, Freestyle 50 metres and Individual Medley 200 metres she came first and was adjudged as the under 13 Champion in 2013 and in the following year in the same tournament she became the Joint Champion by winning Induvidual Medley 200 metres Freestyle and second in 100 metres Butterfly event and in the All Island Meet she could not come up to expectations and in 2015 at the District meet she swept the board by winning 200 metres Individual Medley 100 and 200 metres butterfly events and in the North Western Provincial Meet too she clinched the Championship by winning the same events

Competing in the under 15 age group too she became the District Champion in 2016 by winning 100 and 200 metres Freestyle and 200 metres butterfly events and at the Provincial Meet she came first in 200 metres butterfly and came second in the other two events and in the Nationals she came fourth in the 200 metres butterfly and finally in the club level participating in the under 18 age group she became the District Champion by winning 100 and 200 metres Free Style and 200 metres butterfly and in the Provincial Meet too she was the champion and participating at the National Championship she could not win a place.

Mishell’s first school meet was in 2018 in the under 15 age group and once again she swept the board in 50 metres butterfly, and 200 metres Individual Medley and became the Champion and in the All Island Novices Championship she was the Girl’s under 15 Champion.

In 2019 too she won the Championship at the District Level by doing her pet events. Her Teacher in Charge of Swimming is Mrs. Arunalatha Guneththi.

She got through the GCE Ordinary Level Examination with flying colours and for her higher studies she joined Dhammissara National School in 2020 and it is Dhammissara’s gain and Dankotuwa Balikas loss. Due to Coronavirus she could not participate in swimming in the last year at school level.
