Kawmini Wickremasinghe a netball star in the making

Kawmini Wickremasinghe

Sixteen year old up and coming netball player who is the house captain of the Netball Team for three successive years and an Athlete Kawmini Vidagda Wickremasinghe has brought honour and fame to her Alma Mater Dhammissara National School Nattandiya. She was admitted to her present school in 2009 and following in the footsteps of her mother Prajapathi Wimalasuriya who was a fine sports woman during her hey day at Pushpadana Balika Vidyalaya Kandy and her father Ashela Upul Wickremasinghe always encouraged her to take part in sports. Kawmini too commenced athletics and later she started playing netball also.

When she was in Grade three she participated in the school Inter house Sports Meet in 2011 under 10 age group in 60 and 75 metres and 400x100 relay and Long Jump and she won places. There were no sports meet in the following year at her school and in 2014 and 2015 she took part in the Sports Meet.

In 2015 she participated in netball in the under 11 age group at the school Inter House Meet and she got selected to the School Netball Team due to her performances and in 2016 participating at the All Island Milo Netball Tournament her school finished among the Best 16 Teams in the island and in the following year at the Inter House Netball Tournament they were the runners up and she was awarded school colours for Netball. The next Milo All Island Netball Tournament was in 2018 and her team reached up to the Semi Finals and in 2019 they were the North Western Provincial Runners Up. She captained the Netball team in the Inter House Tournaments in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In the School Prize Giving she carried away the Best Student and the Best Netball Players Award. In addition in 2011 she did Chess and obtained the third place. Her Principal Anil Pushpakumara, Deputy Principal Mrs. Nilmini Rodrigo and Prefect of Games Keerthi Jayasekera are always supportive of her to come up the ladder.
