Chamodya Yapabandara, a Grade 13 student of Girls’ High School, Kandy is the present captain of the School Chess team. The Chess team of Girls High School has fared remarkably well in National and International Chess Tournaments and their Present Coach is M.Farzan and Teachers-in-charge are Anuradha Koswatte, Indu Nagolla (Senior Coaches) and Priyangika Ranasinghe (Primary coach).

The Chess players who represented Sri Lanka were in different Age groups and they are Prasansha Premanath, Wishwara Mapa, Kasundi Senanayake, Chanethma Marasinghe, Rumethma Tennakoon, Miyumi Wijesinghe, Sanali Wijesinghe, Abhimani Herath, Kiruthikah Marthikeyan.
The Chess players who have won medals representing Sri Lanka at International Level tournaments are Chamodya Yapabandara, and Nethmi Fernando.
The team achievements obtained at the All Island Schools contests organized by the Department of Education in the year 2016 Under 15 Girls Chess team -First Runner-up and in 2017 Under 15 Girls Chess team – 2nd Runner-up and in 2018 Under 17 Girls Chess team 1st Runners –up – Under 20 Girls Champions team.
The Under 15 Girls Chess Champions and Under 13 Girls Chess Champions are the present senior and junior chess teams of the Girls High School.
Junior team – Nethmi Fernando(Captain) Kiruthikah Karthikeyan, Isurundi Kiuldeniya, Wishwara Mapa, Chaminda Poththewela, Thasuni Kumarasinghe,Chameli Ekanayake.
Senior team – Chamodya Yapabandara (Captain), Zainub Saumy, Samadhi Aluvihare, Thejani Rathnayake, Tharuki maleesha, Kasundi Senanayake, Thisali Karunaratne.
Chamodya Yapabandara became the Best Player of the event for winning all the Six Games. Girls' High School, Kandy is the School which has produced the highest number of players for Sri Lanka Women’s National Team as well as Women’s National Chess Championship.
