Devindu Dissanayake an outstanding weightlifter and swimmer

Devindu Charithapani Dissanayake , a Grade 13 student of Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy in the art stream is an outstanding Weightlifter and a promising swimmer. She is a cadet as well and her weightlifting Coaches are M.G.N.R. Bandara and Srimali Samarakoon and her swimming coach is U.H.Sugath and the cadet-in-charge is Captain T.Abeykoon and Warrant Officer Vidyaratne who helped Devindu to improve her Weightlifting ability.

At the start she secured the first place in the 75 Kg. Weight Class at the Junior Novices Championship held at the Welikanda weight lifting Centre in the year 2018. In the same year she secured the first place at the All Island Weightlifting Championship in the 69 Kg. weight class held at the Mawanella Rivisanda School Hall. She secured the second place in the 81 Kg. Weight class at the All island Schools Weightlifting

contest held in 2019. At the Provincial Meet Devindu secured the first place in the 69 Kg. weight class and repeated her winning spree to secure the first place at the XLV National Sports Festival in the 75 Kg. weight class in the year 2018. In 2019 she won the first place in the 81 Kg. Weight class and in 2020 she won the first place at the XLVI National Sports Festival in the 81 Kg.weight class.

As a Swimmer Devindu won the first place in 200 Metre Individual Medley event at the seventh Novices Meet in 2011 and in 2012 she won the first place in 25 Metre Backstroke in the same event. At the Age group championship she won the first place in 200 Metre Individual Medley event and in the same year she secured the second place in the Butterfly event.

At the 8th Annual Age group Swimming Championship she secured the second place in the 100 Metre Free Style event. After she started her swimming career she has won the first place in the Backstroke in 25 Metre event and first place in 100 Metre Individual Medley event and in 2014 she won the 25 Metre Butterfly event at the Central Province Swimming Meet.

As a Cadet in the year 2017 she attended the School Cadet Battalion at the Annual

Assessment Army Wing Boys/Girls Camp and was placed third in the De Soysa Challenge Shield for which she won the School Colours. Devindu is thankful to all three coaches of the sports disciplines and after her higher studies she hopes to join the Kotalawala Defence Academy to become an Officer in the Armed Forces.
