Chamika topples top seed at Badminton Nationals

Chamika Karunaratne created a major upset on the third day of the National Badminton Championships, which continued at the SLBA, MBA, and Otter AC Indoor Stadiums, yesterday.

Chamika, the youngest brother of the Karunarartne family, showed his prowess when he defeated top seed Lochana de Silva in straight sets 21-11, 21-10 to reach the Men’s Open quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, defending champion Niluka Karunaratne also came out with a solid performance to enter the quarter-finals of the Men’s Open.

Niluka, who is hoping to win his 17th National title, defeated Siyath Senaratne in straight sets 21-12, 21-11.

In contrast, Dinuka Karunaratne lost his first set 21-23 but came back to beat Buwaneka Guantilleka 21-10, 21-10 in the remaining two sets and enter the quarter-finals of the Men’s Open.

In the Women’s Open, defending champion Dilmi Dias was also knocked-out from the pre quarter-finals as she lost to the unseeded Ashini Fernando 21-15, 21-19.

However, Chandrika de Silva and Nadeesha Gayanthi qualified to play in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Open. Results:

Men’s Open (pre quarter-finals): Chamika Karunaratne beat Lochana de Silva 21-11, 21-10. Ranthushka Karunathilleka beat Chirath Illeperuma 20-22, 21-14, 21-8. Niluka Karunaratne beat Siyath Senaratne 21-12, 21-11. Lahiru Weerasinghe beat Shamika de Silva 21-14, 21-9. Dumindu Abeywickrama beat Nilesh Wijesekara 21-12, 21-17. Viren Nettasinghe beat Sachin Dias 11-21, 21-15 and walk over. Rasindu Hendahewa beat Chaniru Mirando 21-7, 21-11. Dinuka Karunaratne beat Buwaneka Gunatilleka 21-23, 21-10, 21-10.

Women’s Open (pre quarter-finals): Hasini Ambalangodage beat Pravina Wijesundara 21-11, 21-10. Chandrika de Silva beat Jananuwani Amanda 21-13, 21-18. Ashini Fernando beat Dilmi Dias 21-15, 21-19. Thiyana Vidanarachchi beat Wasana Egodage 21-14, 21-14. Sasini Hansamali beat Janavee Ratnayake 21-14, 21-12. Hasara Wijayaratne beat Keshani Attanayake 21-7, 21-9. Nadeesha Gayanthi beat Chamudi Abeywickrama 21-16, 24-26, 21-11. Madushika Dilrukshi beat Suhasni Vidanage 21-9, 21-16.
