Rugby star Uchitha one of the best hookers

Uchitha Kasun Bandara Jayasuriya, is one of the best hookers in rugby in Sri Lanka at present and he is known as ‘Cheetah’ among friends. He was admitted to the Thalawa Maha Vidyalaya, when he started schooling and after passing the scholarship exam he was admitted to Kingswood College,Kandy for the Grade Six class. Uchitha was a hosteller at his school and the Under 13 rugby coach, Lakmal Hettiarachchi encouraged him to play rugby and he went on to captain the School Under 13 Rugby team in the year 2004 ,Under 16 team in 2006 and Under 18 Ten- a- side team in 2008 and from Under 16 level to Under 18 level the Coaches were Mohamed Faizal, Priyantha Gunaratne, Athula Wijewickrema,Anujaya Mallwarachchi, Nilufer Ibrahim,and Ronnie Ibrahim.

Uchitha was a member of the Kingswood League Champion team in 2008 under the captaincy of Gayan Ratnage and from 2008 onwards Uchitha showed his talent as a hooker in the rugby team and he has maintained it to date. He was selected to the Sri Lanka Junior National Team in 2010 under Shenal Diaz for the Asian Rugby Tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand. He won Junior National Colours in the same year. He played for Sri Lanka Air Force Rugby team in 2011 and had a one month rugby tour to New Zealand with the Air Force team. After that he played for the Up-country Lions team along with Nigel Ratwatte, Radhika Hettiarachchi and Srinath Sooriyabandara to name a few.

For his outstanding performance he was selected to the National Rugby Pool in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 he joined the Champion Kandy SC which won the League and Knock-out titles for more than a decade except in 2013 when both titles were won by Navy. In 2018 he was selected to the Sri Lanka Rugby team under Omalka Gunaratne. They took part in the five Nations Rugby Tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand and his team mates were Fazil Marija, Gayan Weeraratne , Saliya Kumara and Roshan Weeraratne to name a few. His Club coaches were Imthi Marikkar, Sean Wijesinghe and Yohan Taylor. He intends to play as long as he is fit. He is thankful to Malik Samarawickrema , former Principal of Kingswood College, Ranjith Chandrasekera, and all the rugby coaches who supported him
