Hirudini Dassanayake, a Grade.13 student of Girls’ High School,Kandy is an outstanding Karateka who took to this sport in 2011 when the school started the game of Karate and her Karate Instructor was Rohitha Seneviratne.
After she started Karate in the year 2011, she won a Silver Medal in Kata at the National Games held at the Sugathadasa Stadium. In 2012 and 2013 she participated at the National Games unsuccessfully but in the year 2015 Hirudini won a Gold Medal in Kumite at the National Games held at Vihara Maha Devi Hall, Kiribathkumbura.
In the same year she won an International medal when she won a Silver at the 2nd Karate Mayor’s Cup Championship held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Hirudini was also selected to the National Karate team and in 2016 at the third South Asian Karate Championship organized by the South Asian Karate-Do-Federation held in New Delhi, India, she won a Gold Medal in the Kata under 15 event.
In 2018 she took another step forward by taking part at the 9th Commonwealth Games held in Durban,South Africa . Hirudini is a member of the Sri Lankan National team since 2015 and she was the Karate Captain for the year 2018 and 2019 of Girls High School, Kandy.
She won the Karate Black Belt Dan I in 2016 and she is preparing to get Black Belt Dan II very soon. In 2019 Kandy Girls’ High School won the Central Province Karate Championship organized by the Ministry of Education and by the year 2021 Girls’ High School Karatekas have been able to reach National as well as International Level.
Hirudini says that the Karate team of Girls’ High School Kandy is grateful to their Principal, Malkanthi Abeygunasekera, and, the Instructor of Karate, Rohitha Seneviratne for the support extended to them for their success.
