AFC postpones events due to safety concerns

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has decided to postpone several tournaments, which were scheduled for last year and due to commence later this year.

Taking into consideration the uncertainty and risks in view of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the AFC decided to cancel a number of competitions to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders. In line with FIFA’s decision to cancel the FIFA Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups in 2021, the AFC has reluctantly decided to cancel the AFC Under-16 Championship in Bahrain scheduled for last year and the AFC Under-19 Championship in Uzbekistan which was also scheduled for last year.

The next editions of both competitions will be allocated to the same hosts in 2023, as the Uzbekistan Football Association (UFA) host the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup while Bahrain Football Association (BFA) will stage the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup.

The AFC has also decided to cancel the AFC Futsal Championship in Kuwait scheduled for last year and the AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup in Thailand 2021.

The Kuwait Football Association (KFA) and the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) will host the next editions respectively.

Kuwait will stage the AFC Futsal Asian Cup in 2022 while Thailand will host the AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup in 2023.

Meanwhile, the AFC has also decided to reschedule the qualifying round matches for the AFC Under-20 Women’s Asian Cup in 2022 and AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup in 2022. (A.N)
