Vidyartha’s Medunaka a fine all round display

Medunaka Wijethilake deputy skipper of Vidyartha College Kandy gave a fine all-round performance in the 2019-20 season of Under 19 Division Two inter School Cricket (Two day) tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.

Medunaka Wijethilake was admitted to Vidyartha College Kandy in 2006. He commenced cricket under his father Mahesh Wijethilake from 2010 as a right hand batsman and left arm medium paceman. He started school Cricket at Vidyartha College Kandy in 2012. He represented the school under 13 ‘C’team in the same year. He scored 120 runs and claimed 30 wickets with 4 five wicket hauls.

He represented the school under 13 ‘A’ team in 2013 and 2014. He represented the school under 15 team ‘A’ team in 2015 and led them in 2016.

He scored 321 runs and claimed 21 wickets with two 5 wicket hauls in 2016. He represented the Kandy district team and Central Province team in the under 15 Prima Champion Trophy inter district and inter Provincial tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket in 2016. He was second leading wicket taker in the inter provincial tournament.

He represented the school under 13 teams and under 15 first year as a left arm medium paceman. He turned to a left arm leg spinner under Sunil Fernando the provincial coach of Central. Province

He represented the school under 17 team in 2017. He represented the school under 19 (1st XI) team as a fresher in the season of 2017/18. He scored 405 runs with two half centuries in 12 matches and claimed 50 wickets with 4 five wicket hauls. He led the school under 17 team in 2018. He took 12 wickets in four matches in 2017. He represented the Central province under 19 team in the under 19 provincial tournament in 2017. He scored 825 runs with two centuries and five half centuries in the season of 2018/19. He claimed 63 wickets with 5 five wicket hauls in the same season. He was selected to a 25 member squad for Sri Lanka Under 19 team

Right hand batsman Medunaka Wijethilake scored 718 runs in 21 innings (13 matches) with a century and five half centuries (Ave. 35.90) in the season of 2019/2020. Left arm leg spinner Medunaka claimed 58 wickets for 607 runs with 5 five wicket hauls and one ten wicket haul (Ave. 10.46) .

His best batting performance was139 runs against President’s College Kotte . He made five half centuries against Taxila Central (82), St. Mary’s Kegalle (85), Holy Cross Kalutara (89), Sri Devananda Ambalangoda (60), Sri Jayawardenapura MV (56).

His best bowling performance in an innings was7 wickets for 48 runs against St. Peter’s college Negombo. His best bowling performance in a match was 11 wickets for 97 runs against President’s college Rajagiriya. He claimed 5 wicket hauls against Holy Cross Kalutara (6/50), Rahula Katugastota (5/38), President’s Rajagiriya (5/46) & (6/51), St. Peter’s Negombo (7/48), St. Mary’s Chilaw (6/39) and St. John’s Panadura (5/62). His best all-round performance in a match was against President’s college Rajagiriya. He scored 139 runs and claimed 5 for 46 and 6 for 51.

Vidyartha College Kandy entered the quarter final in the limited overs tournament in the season of 2019/20. (Due to the prevailing health concerns (Covid-19), the SLSCA decided to postpone the ongoing Under 19 all tournament matches until further notice. (From March 15)
