Theshan Dananjaya a volleyball player par excellence

Sri Lanka Youth Player, member of the Joseph Vaz Volleyball CLub and Madampe Volleyball Club Prangi Kankanamage Theshan Dananjaya excelled for Dammissara Madya Maha Vidyalaya Nattandiya as a Volleyball Player and brought honour and glory to his Alma Mater.

Theshan was admitted to Dammissara Primary School in 2006 and the Head Master of the Primary was Mr. Nandana and his first teacher was Mrs. Kalyani. When he was under eight he commenced Chess and his school won the Divisional, Zonal, District and Provincial tournaments and in the following year their team won all the Lower Division Tournaments and in the Provincial tourney they ended up third . After that following his cousin sister’s son Kanchana Chathuranga started to play Volleyball in the same year representing the under 13 team as the Setter they won the Lower Grades and in the DSI Tournament they were the Runners Up.

In 2014 their under 15 team won all the qualifying tournaments and in the All Island Tournaments Dammissara emerged as the All Island Runners Up. In 2016 representing the under 18 team they were the DSI Runners Up and Theshan was adjudged the Best Attacker and in the All Island Tournament too they were the Runners Up.

In 2017 playing in the under 19 age group they clinched the DSI Championship and in the following year in the All Island under 20 tournament they were the Runners Up. In the same year they were the under 19 DSI trophy Champions. Also they won the Munchee Open Volleyball Tournaments representing the United Sports Club Nattandiya and they were the Dialog Presidents Gold Cup winners in 2018. In 2019 they were the All Island under 20 School Champions. He also passed the GCE A/L Examination with 2 “A” s and one “B” and qualified to enter the Engineering Faculty of Moratuwa University.

In 2017 he joined his father Thilak Somananda in Italy and represented the Milan Provincial Team in the Zenith Volleyball Tournament of Italy and he was adjudged the Best Blocker of the tournament and it was a fine exposure for Theshan. In 2015 Dammissara Team participated in the Malaysian V-Services Tournament in which eight teams participated and Dammissara were the winners and in 2017 in the same tournament they were the Runners Up.

He was awarded School Colours at the Colours Nite in 2014 and he was reawarded school colours annually up to 2019. Also he was felicitated by the Nattandiya Pradeshiya Sabha for his achievements and awarded North Western Volleyball Colours He was well supported by the Master in Charge of Volleyball Pasan Jinadasa Deputy Principal Mrs. Nilmini Rodrigo coaches Kerthi and Channa Jayasekera in addition his parents Thilak Somananda and Shyamali Damayanthi were always behind Theshan’s success.
