Suresh Mohan cricket coach of Jaffna with a proven track record

Santhiramohanathas Suresh Mohan who coaches the first eleven cricket team of Jaffna Central College completed a level two cricket coaching course which was conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

He started his career as Cricket coach of Jaffna Central College in September 2001 and was promoted as head coach in the year 2005 and continued his coaching in the same college for 19 years up to 2020.

He worked as a coach without getting any special allocation for coaching in the college during this period. He trained the players of the under 13, 15, 17 and 19 cricket team of Jaffna Central college.

During the time of war in the Northern part of Sri Lanka, even without proper equipment and facilities, every year at least one team would become as champions or runner up in the local (Jaffna) cricket tournament conducted by Jaffna District School Cricket Association.

As a coach, under his guidance each team of the college reached the next level in its cricket career. Starting from the Battle of the North, which is one of the traditional three day cricket tournaments of north with 114 matches, Jaffna Central College emerged champions for five consecutive years from 2007 to 2011, which is a record victory for them.

In the 12 T20 tournament conducted by Jaffna school Cricket association and British Tamil Cricket Association, Jaffna Central College emerged champions eight times under his coaching.

A remarkable achievement in his career is, for the very first time a team from the northern part of Sri Lanka reached semi finals in the under 14 cricket tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association in 2004.

This was made to happen with the assistance of Late Mr. K. Rasathurai who was the principal at that time and the vice president of Sri Lanka School Cricket Association.

Under his coaching Under 17 cricket team of Jaffna Central College promoted to the division 02, by emerging as the runner up in the match against Zahira College Kalmunai.

In 2016 he was appointed as physical education teacher in Jaffna central college and continued his coaching there. He completed Diploma in physical Education (3 Years) at University of Jaffna.

Under his coaching the under 15 cricket team of Jaffna Central College was promoted to division 2 by defeating Sri Sanghabodhi College Nittambua in the finals in 2018 under S. Alanraj.

In 2019 with his assistance as head coach and with coach Mr. S. Thasoban, the under 13 cricket team has been promoted to division 2, for the consecutive appearance for 4 years in the quarter finals of division 3 cricket tournament. Under his coaching under 17 cricket team of Jaffna Central College reached up to the quarter finals in division two, in the years of 2017 and 2018.

Another remarkable achievement in his coaching career is, under his oaching two player from under 19 cricket team of Jaffna Central college, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth member of the Jaffna Stallions in LPL and S. Mathushan, played in under 19 National Cricket team of Sri Lanka in 2018/19. Among these two players . S. Mathusan has been selected to the squad for the Asia Cup cricket tournament 2019.

He was also appointed as the prefect of games of Jaffna central college in 2018 and 2019. He was also appointed as representative for Northern province in Sri Lanka school Cricket Association. He was also appointed as Master in charge for the under 19 Northern Provincial cricket team in the year of 2019 and also appointed as Master in charge for the under 15 Jaffna district cricket team in the Prima cricket tournament. He completed the SLC Level One certificate in 2002 and he completed SLC Level Two in 2020. (Y.K.)
