National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka has converted its Hemasiri Fernando auditorium to a state-of-the-art modern facility for the benefit of the sports fraternity of Sri Lanka and others. The work of this Rs. 25 million project will be commissioned this evening to coincide with the holding of the National Olympic Committee Annual General Meeting in the evening.
Olympic Council of Asia under “Olympicasia” bore a cost of $ 100,000 towards the project while balance expenses came from the coffers of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and philanthropists. 110 persons could be accommodated and it will contain all modern equipment that is required for a facility of this status.
Commenting on the project Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee Maxwell de Silva “In reality this was overdue and due to various reasons, we were putting it off. A facelift to our auditorium was a must. Twelve years down the line the wrinkles of aging began to appear at this facility, but it was too much of a busy place even to ponder a face lift
unless it was absolutely necessary. Besides that, there were other complications such as the cost involved and to what extent that they were ready to refurbish this popular centre.
“To begin with, we are looking at interactive display and the seats and the audio-visual implementation to the highest standards. Prior to embarking on this project, we took into consideration on how the facilities in Lausanne – IOC’s head quarters is and we are trying matching them as much as we could. Earlier the display that we had -- for instance the
projector, there was a screen that we used to project on with the control panel. Now we are going implement multi functional digital screen which has an interactive mode. For instance, it could be used for educational, conferences and have equipment like zoom etc to enhance its value.”
