Sports Minister promises upgraded Modarawila ground

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa giving instructions to officials during his visit to Modarawila ground

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa said that he will set up an Administrative Committees to look into all the Sports Stadiums in the country to run them properly. He said so addressing sports officers, coaches, sports teachers and athletes, at the a Modarawila playground, Panadura, during his inspection tour to the ground on December 04.

Rajapaksa pointed out the dire need of bringing village level sportsmen and sportswomen to the national level by creating opportunities and pave the way for them to engage in sports activities in a much organized manner in play grounds like this.

Sports Minister arrived in the Modarawila playground, along with Sports Ministry officials on the request of Panadura political authority and sports officials with the aim to develop neglected Modarawila playground.

Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Kalutara District Co ordinating Committee Chairman, Parliamentarian Sanjeewa Edirimanna and State Minister Jayantha Samaraweera were also present at the venue.

Sports Minister assured that the development work at Modarawila playground will commence with the dawn of the new year and said that the play ground will be upgraded with all necessary facilities, so the athletes and sports loving public in Panadura will be able to use the play ground for their day to day sporting activities and other sports programmes.

Sports Minister briefed Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena and his officials to prepare a new master plan on ground development. He also instructed Minister Abeygunawardena to take swift action to take over the plot of land belonging to Modarawila ground which was sold to a businessman in Pandura.

Minister Rajapaksa went on to say that his main expectation is to assist in renovating village level playgrounds and help village level athletes to march forward in sports while creating a sport loving society in villages in order to create a healthy society which is very helpful in country’s development process.

Sports Minister lend an ear to athletes from leading schools in Panadura, coaches, sports instructors and PTIs during the inspection tour and welcomed their ideas and suggestions regarding development of the ground.

Panadura PS Chairman Hemantha Waduge, Panadura DS Buddini Gunawardena and Sports Ministry officials, teachers, coaches and sports club officials were also present on the occasion.
