Nigel Ratwatte to lead Kandy Sports Club once again

Nigel Ratwatte, an old boy of Trinity College,Kandy is a talented rugby player who is Captaining the Rugby Team of Kandy Sports Club for the second successive year and he is also the present Captain of the Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens Team.

Nigel learnt the basics of the game of Rugby when he was a student of Trinity College and later on left for South Africa in the year 2001and joined the King Edwards School in Johannesburg for studies and continued playing rugby, his pet game.

After returning from South Africa he joined the CR & FC Rugby team and played as Fly-half in 2010 and 2011 and crossed over to Up Country Lions in 2012 helping them to clinch the Club Rugby Sevens Title in the following year before joining Kandy SC in 2014 and has been playing for them for the last six years and became the Captain of the Kandy SC Rugby team in 2020 His younger brother Damien played for Royal College in 2011 and 2012 as a centre and also turned out for Kandy SC before leaving for Australia

Kandy SC is dominating Sri Lanka Rugby and it is evident that it has a unique Record of registering victory in the annual Clifford Cup League Rugby tournaments as well as the Knock-out Rugby tournaments for more than 10 years. He started his International Rugby Sevens career in the year 2016 at the Five Nation Rugby Tournament under the captaincy of Fazil Marija held in Philippines in the year 2016.

Later on Nigel went up on the ladder of success to get the captaincy of Sri Lanka Sevens rugby team up to date. There were 35 Rugby players in the team coached by Fazil Marija and among the players were Roshan Weeraratne,Jason Dissanayake, Srinath Suriyabandara and Lavanga Perera to name a few. Fazil Marija, the versatile Rugby Player is a Level II IRB Rugby Coach as well as a Strength and Conditioner Instructor who is assisted by Buddhika Thalagampola. The team members were practicing regularly for four days a week but due to the present situation in the country due to the Covid 19 epidemic they were prevented from rugby practices but they will start as soon as the country becomes normal.

Nigel is thankful to his team mates, their Coach Fazil Marija and the Club Manager,Kapila Silva and Malik Samarawickrema, Trustee of the Club for the support and encouragement given to the Rugby Team of Kandy SC.
