Naveesha, an emerging karate prodigy

Twelve-year -old karate player, Senarathna Mudalige Naveesha Kalani of Dammissara Maha Vidyalaya Naththandiya is following the foot steps of her father Pradeep Pushpakumara who too an old boy and a karate player of Dammissara MV. Naveesha has shown good improvement in her short karate career and has brought honour and fame to her Alma Mater in Karate.

Naveesha was admitted to the school when Mr. Gunasekera was at the helm of the school and her first teacher was Mrs. Kalyani. At the age of nine she came under Mr. Peter and took up to karate at the school and in addition she attended practices at the Peter Sotokan Karate Academy. She was selected to the best 16 in the island in 2017 at the Sri Lanka Schools Karate Do Association Junior Kata event.

In the same year at the Open Karate National Championship organized by Japan Sotokan Association in Sri Lanka, she came first in Kata and placed third in Kumite. In 2018 Sri Lanka Nationals Karate Championship organized by Karate Do Federation for the under 13, she came first in Kumite and qualified for the best 15 in Kata event. She became second in Kumite and second in Kata Event at the Puttalam District Tournament. She won the first place in first in Kumite and second place in Kata at the Provincial Meet of North Western Province in 2019.

At the schools Karate Do Tournament in 2019 in Junior under 12 championship she came first in Kumite and in the same year in the District Tournament she came first in Kumite and second in Kata. In the Provincial Meet Naveesha came first in Kumite and third in Kata in 2012. She was selected to the Best 16 from the Island at the Ambassador of Japan under 12 Karate Tournament conducted by the Japanese Embassy in Colombo.

In the same year Naveesha won the third place in Kata at the ISKU International in online Championship 2020 in India. Twelve countries participated and from 600 competitors she won the third place in Karta.

She received School Colours for karate in 2017 and 2018. Her mother Sandya Boteju is always behind her success. The Principal Anil Pushpakumara, the Deputy Principal Nilmini Rodrigo and POG Keerthi Jayasekera and the coach Mr. Peter are always supportive in her endeavours.
