Kawya Meedum Gamage of St. Anthonys’ Girls School, Katugastota is an outstanding cricketer who started her cricket career at her first school, Jinaraja College, Gampola under the guidance of cricket coach R.Neville who taught her the basics of the game. Kawya got an opportunity to represent her school, Jinaraja College at the Kandy District Softball Cricket Tournament In 2016. Her highest score at the tournament was 40 runs against Ulapane Maha Vidyalaya, Gampola. With the inspiration from softball cricket later she moved on to hardball cricket under the instructions of coach R.Neville and she represented Kandy District cricket team under the captaincy of Shiny Senaratne. Kawya did well to claim three wickets for 25 runs against Nuwara Eliya District in her first outing.
She entered St. Anthonys’ Girls School, Katugastota in 2017 and got the opportunity to improve her talent in cricket under the watchful eyes of her school cricket coach Susantha Basnayake who is a Level 2 cricket.
In her first appearance representing her new school she scored 45 runs against Galewela Central in the finals to emerge champions of the tournament in 2018. At the same year she scored 55 against Kegalle Balika Vidyalaya, 20 runs against Ratnamali MV- Gampaha, 25 against Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda. She also performed well with the ball capturing 3 for 25 against Kegalle Balika Vidyalaya.
In 2019 she scored 49 runs against DS Senanayake Vidyala, Kurunegala at the All Island Division II Cricket Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and in the same year she claimed 4 wickets for 40 runs against Kegalle District with her medium pace bowling. She has been representing the Kandy Provincial Ladies Cricket team since 2017 under the captaincy of Shiny Senaratne .
Kawya Meedum is thankful to her coaches and her parents for the guidance given to her and she is intending to continue her higher studies to become an accountant while playing cricket as long as possible.
