Mahamaya Girls reign supreme in swimming

The Swimming team of Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy has dominated the schools swimming scene under the Coaching of veteran Coach U.H.Sugath who guided the team to win the All Island Championship for 20 consecutive years up to the year 2018. Mahamaya Girls School is one of the leading Schools in Kandy in the Academic and Sports Fields which is very popular with regard to sports activities such as Netball,Athletics,Hockey,Swimming, Badminton basketball,Table Tennis, Chess, Tennis and Cricket.

The School has produced Thilini Jayasinghe, a Badminton player who represented the Country in Olympic Games on two occasions, Saranga Sangakkara, who won the National Lawn Tennis title at the age of 15 years, Dhammika Mahawattage nee de Alwis and Hyacinth Wijesinghe ,both represented Sri Lanka in Netball. Padmadevi Nawaratne and Chintha Baddewela excelled in Athletics and Ayeshani Weerakkody is the former Under 21 Captain of Sri Lanka Hockey. The others who represented Sri Lanka in Hockey were Padmini Koralagama, Lakshitha Namalarachchi and Nilu Weragama nee Wijekoon. Deepika Rodrigo was a Silver Medalist at the Asian Games in Table Tennis and the two sisters Hansanie and Madhavi Weeratunge excelled in Swimming and Madhavi represented Sri Lanka at the Youth Olympics in Swimming in the year 2010. There were more Sportswomen of Mahamaya who excelled in various disciplines which do not come to my mind who were National and International Players.

Going back to Swimming at Mahamaya, the Champion Swimming team of the School have done extremely well throughout the last Twenty years to become All Island School Champions for a long time.

During the entire period their Swimming Coach was the versatile U.H.Sugath who guided the Team to achieve this unique feat in the year 2018 and the Swimming Captain of this lucky team is Maheshika Hewage and she is thankful to the Coach for his untiring effors in training her team assisted by Coach Ajith Roshan. Also the former Principal of Mahamaya, Indra Withanachchi, Teacher-in-charge Priyanga Herath and the former teacher in charge Chintha Ruwanpathirana who were very supportive in clinching the swimming championship.

Maheshika metioned that her team members outstanding performances helped them to achieve this Swimming title in the year 2018 i.e.

Uththama Silva, Devindya Jayawardana, Onethra Weerasinghe, Nikoli Bandara, Shanali de Silva,Ovini Ratnayake, Lahini Costa, Kimuthu de Silva, Sathusmi Diwyanjalie,Chamathka Kariyawasam, Methmi Anjana and Rohansi de Silva and Maheshika also mentioned the support of past Swimming Captains.
