Former Sri Lanka Captain, Dinesh Chandimal commended the performance of young Vijayakanth Viyaskanth who made his debut for the Jaffna Stallions Franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20 Cricket Tournament on Friday.

The 19-year-old leg-spinner from Jaffna Central College created a piece if history by becoming the first cricketer from this region to participate in an internationally televised game in Sri Lanka.

“He is a brilliant bowler and I was happy to see him making his debut in this format in a high-profile game,” Chandimal revealed after scoring an unbeaten 68 for Colombo Kings in the same match.

Chandimal, who won the Man-of-the-Match award, also praised Viyaskanth for his character and the temperament he displayed during his first outing.

“He had a very good attitude and was confident in his first game from the little what I saw on the field,” explained Chandimal after scoring his second half century of the tournament.

Viyaskanth was introduced into the attack at a vital stage of the innings and he lived upto expectations by returning economical figures of one wicket for 29 runs from his four overs.

“He bowled to some of the legends like Angelo Mathews and Andre Russell in this game and I hope he will learn some more during the tournament.”

Chandimal believed that Viyaskanth could be a revelation for his country in the future if he could really focus on the game and work hard on his technique.

“I think, if he can do some more hard work he has a bright future for Sri Lanka and I am looking forward to his heroics in this tournament,” added Chandimal.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa was pleased to see the performance of Viyaskanth and gave full credit to the young bowler.

“It is wonderful to see young Vijaykanth Viyaskanth earning his spurs in the Jaffna Stallions Team at the Lanka Premier League,” the Minister revealed in a Tweeter message.

“This is exactly what this tournament is all about, providing a platform for youngsters around the country to showcase their talent,” he added.

Viyaskanth made his Youth International debut for Sri Lanka against India in July, 2018 at this same venue and also represented the country in the Under-19 series against Australia in January, last year.
