Dazzling Danushka scales new heights in Hambantota

Danushka Gunathilaka

The Galle Gladiators Team may be languishing at the bottom of the points table but they could be proud with the performance of Danushka Gunathilaka, the highest run-getter so far, in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20 Cricket Tournament.

The 29-year-old dashing left-hand opening batsman is currently enjoying a tremendous LPL season having already accumulated a tally of 284 runs from his five innings.

His latest heroics came on Saturday, when he smashed a 52-ball 72 with one six and 10 boundaries in a high-scoring game against the Dambulla Viiking Team at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.

But once again, Gunathilaka ended-up in the losing side as the Gladiators fell short by nine runs in overtaking the Viiking’s formidable total of 207.

In the process, Gunathilake went on to complete his third half-century in the tournament having earlier scored 82 against the Kandy Tuskers and 56 against the Jaffna Stallions respectively.

Another significant fact about his batting performances in this tournament is the high average which is well over the mark of 70 and the strike-rate which is also at a satisfying mark of 146.39.

No doubt, Gunathilaka has already left a lasting impression in this tournament and has collected his runs in a more calculated manner stroking 39 fours and has cleared the ropes only on four occasions.

Gunathilaka’s efforts in this showpiece are even more unique considering the fact that so far, only two other batsmen have crossed the 200-run barrier at the halfway stage. Dambulla Viiking Skipper, Dasun Shanaka has scored 234 runs with the help of two half centuries from his five innings at an average of 46.80.

In addition, Jaffna Stallions opener, Avishka Fernando has scored 209 runs inclusive of two fifties from his five innings at an average of 52.25.
