Records galore on opening day of LPL

Kusal Janith Perera, the highest individual scorer at Hambantota

Records tumbled in a spectacular manner as the curtain raiser match of the Lanka Premier (LPL) League T20 Cricket Tournament produced a run feast on Thursday at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.

The opening fixture of the 23-match tournament played between Colombo Kings and Kandy Tuskers under lights produced an aggregate tally of 438 runs for the loss of just 10 wickets.

The Tuskers batting first, amassed 219 for three while the Kings responded with 219 for seven and later went on to clinch the Super Over in a thriller.

This was the first occasion any team had scored over 200 runs in a T20 match at this venue and the previous highest tally was Sri Lanka’s 182 for four against Zimbabwe, back in 2012.

In addition, this was the first time a T20 match had ended in a tie at this venue.

Meanwhile, Kusal Janith Perera, the Captain of Kandy Tuskers set up another ground record when he smashed a sparkling 87 from 52 balls with the aid of four sixes and nine boundaries.

The aggressive left-hander in the process became the highest individual scorer at this venue while surpassing the previous best of 85 made by South Africa’s Francois du Plessis against Sri Lanka in 2013.

Colombo Kings opener, Dinesh Chandimal, who hit a match winning 80 also moved into the second in the list of individual high scorers ahead Tillekaratne Dilshan (74 n.o) and Shahid Afridi (52 n.o).

Chandimal also put his name in another record while adding 67 runs for the second-wicket along with Thikshila de Silva (22).

This stand became the highest second-wicket partnership as they eclipsed the previous second-wicket best of 45 runs between the South African pair of Quinton de Kock and Francois du Plessis against Sri Lanka in 2013.
