Fifth year player, all rounder, right hand opening batsman and right arm off spinner Kuragoda Gamlathge Thisara Sachinthana was appointed by the Principal of Taxila Central College, Horana Mrs. K. K. P. M. Jayathilake as the first eleven cricket captain for the forthcoming school cricket season 2020/21. Thisara was admitted to the Grade one of his nearby school Navodya Maha Vidyalaya, Handapangoda when L. W. J. Bandara was at the helm of the school and Sunethra Jayasinghe was his first teacher.
Whilst at school he took part in the inter house under 12 volleyball and soft ball cricket tournaments and fared well. He was successful in the grade five Scholarship Examination in 2013 and admitted to Taxila Central College, Horana and the same year itself he came under Kamal Sujeewa who was the cricket coach and Master in Charge of cricket and got selected for the under 13 cricket team. He got the opportunity to play as mainly a bowler. In his first year in the under 13 he opened batting and in five matches he claimed 24 scalps and in his second year as the captain he captured 46 wickets with a match bag of 10 wickets versus Kannangara Maha Vidyalaya, Matugama and two five wicket hauls and in 2015 too he captained the team and bagged 32 wickets with three five wicket hauls.
His first year in the under 15 was in 2017 and he was the captain and captured 42 wickets with four five wicket hauls and played for Kalutara District in Prima Cup and in the following year too captaining the team took 24 wickets with two five wicket hauls and played for the District and Provincial teams. With these performances under his belt he was selected to the 30 member squad in preparation for the Sri Lanka Schools under 15 tour of Malaysia. But he was not successful.
Playing in the under 17 he bagged 34 wickets. Taxila College was promoted to division one in 2019 and in that year he was able to capture only 16 wickets in four outings.
His first year in the first eleven was in 2016/17 and he was the “Baby of the Team” and played only in one game and in his second year he claimed 36 wickets with four five- wicket hauls and played for the Big Match and the Limited Over match against their arch rivals Piliyandala Central.
In 2018/19 season he played for the Big Match and the One Dayer and captured 40 wickets with two five wicket hauls and won the Best Bowler’s award in the Big Match.
Their school was lucky enough to play this years Big Match and the Limited Over Match which was played prior to the out break of Corona and he played in both these two matches and claimed 51 wickets through out the season with three five wicket hauls. His best was of 9 for 25 versus St. Mary’s College, Chilaw and he captained the Kalutara District Zonal team so far through out his career representing his Alma Mater.
As a bowler he has captured 325 wickets in all age groups and he has another year under his belt to represent his school. Perhaps this may be a record for his school. The Principal Mrs. Jayathilake the head coach Sanjaya Disanayake and the Assistant coaches Gavinda Basnayake and Udara Rasanga are always supportive to Thisara and he will be having the services of eight members who represented the team last year and his ambition is to beat their arch rivals Piliyandala Central in their 65th Big Match.
