NWPCA felicitates young cricketers

Young talented cricketers in the North Western province were felicitated by the North Western Province Cricket Association (NWPCA) at a ceremony held at the Ruvisha Beach Hotel in Kochchikade recently.

Sri Lanka One day and T20 cricketer Minod Bhanuka, Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup captain Nipun Dhananjaya Perera have shown good performances in the Sri Lanka Schools Under 19 tournament last season. Muditha Premadasa (Maliyadeva College Kurunegala - 1000 runs in Division One), Ayon Fernando (St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya -1000 runs in Division Two), Prabuddha Premalal (Ibbagamuwa Central College - 1000 runs in Division Three), Sithum Akilanaka (St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya - 100 wickets in Division Two), St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa (joint Champion Under 15 division One Schools tournament), Maliyadeva College Kurunegala (joint Championship Under 13 division One Schools tournament), Wayamba Royal College Kurunegala (Runner up - Under 17 division Three Schools tournament) and Ibbagamuwa Model School (Semi finalist Under 17 division Three Schools tournament) were felicitated by the NWPCA.

Minod Bhanuka the left-handed wicketkeeper batsman and a product of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala and St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa won a place in the Sri Lanka One Day International team and Sri Lanka T20 squad against Pakistan in Pakistan last year. The left-handed top order batsman Nipun Dhananjaya Perera led the Sri Lanka Under 19 team at ICC Youth World Cup held in South Africa in 2019. Nipun Dhananjaya Perera brought honour to the North Western province. He is an old boy of St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa. North Western Province became the runner-up of the Prima All-Island Under-15 Cricket Tournament last year. Twelve provincial teams participated in the tournament. The team was led by Chathumal Fernando of St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya. He was awarded a trophy and a cash prize for his achievement.

Muditha Premadasa, Ayon Fernando, Prabuddha Premalal and Sithum Akilanka received cricket equipments from NWPCA and St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa, Maliyadeva College Kurunegala, Wayamba Royal College Kurunegala and Ibbagamuwa Model School received Cricket material bags from NWPCA.

Aruna de Silva, Head of Administration - Sri Lanka Cricket participated as the chief guest on the occasion. Bimal Perera, President NWPCA, Krishantha Kapuwatte Secretary NWPCA and Mohommed Siddiq President Kurunegala District Cricket Association too participated. (YK)
