The Ministry of Youth and Sports will team up with Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation to construct a Sports Complex at Kirimandala Mawatha, Nawala, with the objective of empowering the youth and unveiling their hidden talent, which is a part of the Government’s vision.

Both institutions have embarked on this novel project, which will comprise state of the art facilities under one roof to enable all sportsmen/women to train without hassle.

During the period 2012 to 2014 when incumbent President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the Secretary of Defence and Urban Development, it was his brain child to initiate this project to put up a playground with improved facilities in Nawala on part of a land belonging to Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa, State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness Dr. Nalaka Godahewa and Major General (rtd.) M.R.W. de Zoysa, Chairman of Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation along with other officials made an inspection tour to the site recently.

Approximately 12 acres of land will be used to develop an international level Sports Complex, including an Indoor Stadium.

Special attention has been paid to improve sports activities such as long jump and Javelin throw, with the aim of participating and winning at the Olympics 2028.

This Complex will be equipped with all modern facilities and training can be done without any interruption throughout the day for trainees to improve their skills. (AN)
