Foreign riders to compete in Tour de Air Force

Foreign riders will be seen in action at the Tour de Air Force Cycle Tour

Several foreign riders are set to compete in the 22 nd Tour de Air Force Cycle Tour, organised by the Sri Lanka Air Force Cycling Union and schedule to be worked off from March 2 to 4 next year.

This year’s event will be of great significant, as the race will be conducted to coincide with the 70 th Anniversary Celebrations of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

Therefore, the Air Force cycling authorities are planning to invite several riders from the South Asian countries as in the previous years.

As a result, top riders from the Air Force of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are expected to participate this time as well along with Sri Lanka’s elite riders.

“We intend inviting competitors from the South Asian region so that this race will be a highly competitive and colourful event,” a top official of the SLAF Cycling Union told the Daily News yesterday.

The event will be held in the Southern Province and following strict guidelines of the Sports and Health Ministries. The total distance of the race will be between 450km to 500km.

“Since the 70 th Anniversary celebrations of the SLAF will be held in March, the Tour de Air Force will be held on a grand scale like never before,” the official further commented. The Tour de Air Force race, considered as one of the main events in the calendar of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka will have a total prize money of Rs. 3 million.

This year’s Tour de Air Force Cycle Race was held in March from Colombo to Polonnaruwa in three stages with Thushan Rajapaksa and Udeshini Niranjani winning the Men’s and Women’s titles respectively.
