Ashan Ratwatte who led the Trinity College rugby side, had the privilege of receiving the Bradby Shield after beating Royal College from the donor of the shield late .E L Bradby. Ashan Ratwatte a scrum-half was a top class player in that position.
He gave his best for the game of rugby and captained Trinity in 1983 and is a “Lion who led the school to win the Bradby Shield that year,They beat Royal led by Sriyan Cooray 14-6 in Kandy but in the return match in Colombo Royal triumphed by 10 points to 6. Ashan was a natural leader on the field; His slick all-round game was matched by a true winner’s mentality. Ashan was blessed with superb speed and strength and formed great half-back partnerships for the teams he played. In 1983 he was under the guidance of late Col. Bertie Dias and the MIC was late S. Ariyasingam and principal was late Rev.Dr.W.G. Wickremasinghe.
Ashan Ratwatte was to be the chief guest at the second Bradby shield game in Kandy this year, which game is halted due to coronavirus. He was a top class scrum half during his school days. He was also backed up by superb leadership that saw him winning matches. Key to his success was the outstanding partnership he formed with fly-half, a combination that was to feature a Sri Lanka -record, many times for Trinity,Kandy SC, CR & FC and the country.
He played for Kandy Sports Club as a schoolboy in1982.
He had played three or four club matches when he came back to the school side in 1983 to play for the school and lead the side. Ashan Ratwatte, played for Kandy Sports Club and at that time he was the number one scrum half in the country and was an automatic choice to the national team. From Kandy SC he crossed over to CR and FC ended his rugby career there in the early 1990s He was also in the CR and FC rugby committee under Syrian Cooray
