Clubs playing in Seven “A” Division Rugby attached to the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WRFU) will be deprived of their voting rights at the upcoming Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) Annual General Meeting elections which is to be held at the end of August due to the suspension of WPRFU by Sports Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, yesterday.
The seven clubs affiliated to the WPRFU namely Police Sports Club, Havelock’s Sports Club, Colombo Rugby and Football Club (CR & FC), Army Sports Club, Navy Sports Club, Colombo Hockey, Football Club (CH & FC), and Air Force Sports Club are likely to lose their voting rights at this AGM. It is noteworthy that WPRFU has 26 votes at this election.
Due to the non-payment of the annual subtraction by the WPRFU to the governing body SLR, on an appeal made to the Sports Minister in this regard, which was later proven after an inquiry, WPRFU was served with a suspension in accordance to the SLR constitution clauses numbered 16, 17, and 18, for which the Sports Minister (SM) ordered to take immediate action, as per the recommendation made to him by the inquiry panel.
On the amended Gazette Notification 8 (2)(A), issued on March 10, the Sports Minister has received an appeal regarding flouting the SLR constitution by WPRFU. The SM in return appointed a three-member committee to look into this appeal. The committee submitted their final recommendations to the SM, which follows: “On the reports received by the SLR, Secretary and Chief Executive Officer the five provinces, namely-Central Province Rugby Football Union, Ruhunu Province Rugby Football Union, North Central Province Rugby Football Union, Sabaragamuwa Province Rugby Football Union, and Wayamba Provinces Rugby Football Union have paid their annual subscription for the year 2019. Therefore, they are permitted to enjoy the benefits and take care of their rights stipulated by SLR while suspending the WPRFU which has failed to comply according to the constitution laid by the governing body.”
Nazim Mohamed, President of WPRFU, has spoken to the Daily News regarding this issue when he said that “We were informed by the governing body and we will act accordingly.”
