Sri Lanka has a good chance of winning gold at 2022 Commonwealth Games, says Gomes

The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka focuses to the long term and strategic projects during the Covid-19 pandemic. The President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka Dian Gomes believes the country has the realistic chance to get a gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The main target is the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games which will be held in Birmingham, the United Kingdom from July 27 until August 7 in 2022. Another important event for the Sri Lankans is the South Asian Games in 2022 which is scheduled to be held in Lahore, Pakistan.

The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka is planning to make the next selection at the end of the year and plans to start the direct preparation for the 2022 international events on January 2021. The Sri Lankan boxers claimed one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals in the history of the boxing tournaments of the Commonwealth Games.

The first edition of the Commonwealth Games was held in 1930 while the Sri Lankans joined representing themselves under the name of Ceylon in 1938. Sri Lanka achieved a record number of three bronze medals at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia which was their biggest success in the recent two decades. Sri Lanka's top international woman boxer Anusha Kodituwakku, Thiwanka Ranasinghe and Ishan Bandara were their bronze medalists in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The last edition of the Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships for the elite female and male boxers was held in Colombo in January, 2020. The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka invited neutral referees & judges from various Asian nations to arrange fair play and clear scorings for the athletes in the National Elite Boxing Championships.

High number of unexpected results have been delivered by younger Sri Lankan male boxers in the National Championships which were delivered by K.V. Lasindu Eranda, P.A. Rukmal Prasanna, R.W.M. Sanjeewa Rajakaruna and W.K.M.K.G. Indika Ariyarathne.
