Nalandian de Silva leads at Chess Grand Prix

L.M.S.T. de Silva leads after round six competing at the Chess Grand Prix which now in progress at the CFSL headquarters

L.M.S.D de Silva of Nalanda College , Colombo kept his lead with 5 ½ points out of possible six games at the halfway mark at the 7th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2020 which is now in progress at the Chess Federation headquarters, Nugegoda. The tournament conducted by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka(CFSL) which started June 11 and will continue till July 19.

According to the Vice President of CFSL Luxman Wijesuriya who also the General Secretary of South Asian Chess Council and Commonwealth Chess Association, Chess became the first sport to start their Chess calendar in Sri Lanka after a completion of almost four months lockdown period due to Covid -10 pandemic. The CFSL made arrangements following all medical guidelines and history record of players taking part in this event .

Nalandian L.MS.D de Silva who is 2019 National team player beat Elath Mathannga after half way mark of the tournament and de Silva is very energetic and continues his winning streak . Meanwhile G.C Anuradha and Kevin Ranindu of St Bnedict’s are in second with 4 ½ points each followed by Dimuth Abeywardena and E.D.S Chandula respectively .Minul Doluweera who beat Tisal Manjith Piyumantha at round six has four points.

The top 12 Chess players are competing in the 7th Chess Grand Prix and tournament conducted round robin system for supremacy. The 2019 National Team player, Young LMST De Silva, Under 16 National Champion - Kevin Ranindu Silva, National Amateur Champion - EDS Chandula, Buddhika Amarasinghe, Seniors - Dimuthu Priyadarhana and Elath Mathanga, Young stars - Jenith Weeratunge and Thisal Manjith Piyumantha are participating in the event.

Before the starting of the event former chess champions took part in an exhibition tournament to encourage young players. Luxman Wijesuriya the Vice President of FCSL, Reigning Champion Chandana Wijekoon and former National Chess Champions G.C Anuruddha, Minul Sanjuala Doluweera and International Master Romesh Weerawardena participated at this opening ceremony.

The CFSL has offered . 50,000 rupees for the Champion with a total of Rs 115,000 prize money with trophies and medals.
