I am not greedy for power - Lasitha Guneratne

“I am not willing to contest with anyone to restore another term. If the stakeholders require my services, I might consider continuing.” Said Lasitha Gunarathne, President of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) speaking to Daily News Sports yesterday.

With mere five days remaining for the closure of nominations to elect the new SLR administration, there is widespread speculation and rumors circulating in the Rugby circles that the existing president, Lasitha Guneratne is about to contest for another term to hold office. But he rejected all these baseless stories and affirmed that there is no real necessity for him to come forward to contest unless the stakeholders request him to continue for the second term, which he is legally entitled. He says that he has very clearly indicated that he was serving the SLR for the love of the game, which he started playing at the age fifteen years.

Eight out of nine stakeholders have confirmed their support by signing the nomination paper for him to continue his second term. But he was of the view of getting elected without any race or competition. If the situation arises to that level he is willing to quit and give away to another person, who intends to take over the task. Whether he is in power or not he is willing to render his support for the betterment of the game at any juncture.

“As I said earlier, I am not a power greedy person. I have served under several Presidents and Interim committees in several positions. I sincerely want to give my best for the game, which I have done from my young age. If a competition arises then, I will step down without tarnishing the image of the game.” added Lasitha Guneratne.
