Lanka eyes archery wildcard entry at Tokyo Olympics

Sajeev De Silva

The Sri Lanka Archery Association (SLAA) would explore the chances of obtaining a wildcard entry for South Asian Games (SAG) Silver Medallist Sajeev De Silva in an attempt to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.

“Sajeev De Silva is eligible to participate in the Olympics considering the fact that he has achieved the minimum qualifying standard,” a reliable source from the SLAA told the Daily News yesterday.

The wildcards are selected for each sport by the Tokyo Olympic Games Organising Committee in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Archery. De Silva is one of the leading archers in the country having represented Sri Lanka at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia and in several other international events.

“Sajeev De Silva is ahead of two or three points out of the other Sri Lankan competitors who have reached the minimum qualifying score,” the source added further.

Meanwhile, the SLAA is planning to send three archers to compete in the 2022 Asian Games which will be staged in China. The association is hoping to conduct two National level tournaments for juniors and seniors in November in order to form a national pool in preparation for the Olympics and Asian Games.

The SLAA has also proposed to host an international archery championship between the South Asian countries at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama.

In addition, the SLAA is hoping to bring down a foreign archery coach next year while targeting the Tokyo Olympic Games and the Asian Games. In fact, a foreign coach was here for about one and half years as preparations for the SAG but he had to return home because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Under the foreign coach’s guidance, Sri Lanka secured eight medals at the 2019 SAG held in Kathmandu, Nepal including four Silver Medals and four Bronze Medals.
