Kavindu a talented weightlifter

Kavindu Udayanga Ranasinghe

17 year old, Advanced Level student of Vijaya College,Matale, I.P.Kavindu Udayanga Ranasinghe who is a talented Weightlifter and a Powerlifter told this correspondent that lack of equipment in Weight lifting at Matale has prevented him from achieving his goal although his aim was to improve his ability in weight lifting and win a Medal at the next Commonwealth games in 2022. He started weight lifting under the veteran Coach Indrajith Fernando in the year 2017 and showed instant success.

He secured the 2nd place at the Schools National Power Lifting Contest in the 44 Kgs. under 16 Weight Class. From there onwards he gave some creditable performance and following are some contests he won. In the year 2018 he won the under 17 Junior National Weight Lifting title lifting 61 Kgs.( In Snatch, 86 Kgs. In Clean & Jerk and a total of 141 Kgs.) In Power Lifting he won the Under 16 title at the All Island Meet lifting a total of 277 Kgs.(Squat 100 Kgs. Bench Press 50 Kgs. Dead Lift 127 Kgs.) He was awarded the Best Lifters award at the same Meet and in Weight Lifting too he won the under 16 Weight Lifting title when lifting a total of 133 Kgs. (Snatch 55 Kgs. Clean & Jerk 78 Kgs.) In the same year he secured 2nd place at the 5th Student Olympic International Games held in Mehan Rohtak,Haryana- India. He lifted a total of 120 Kgs.( 50 Kgs. in Snatch and 70 Kgs. In snatch) competing in 57 Kgs. But he secured the 1st Place in lifting a total of 340 Kgs.

(125 Kgs. In Squat, 65 Kgs. In Bench Press and 150 Kgs. In dead lift) In the year 2019 he went up the ladder of success and won the under 18 Power Lifting title as well as the Best lifters title at the All Island contest. At this particular Power Liftting contest he lifted a total of 375 Kgs. (140 Kgs. In Squat, 65 Kgs. In Bench Press & 170 Kgs. In dead Lift)

He was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Power Lifting Contest which was held in Newsouthland and Labdor cities in Canada but he was sad that he was unable to participate due to the financial situation of his family and it was difficult for him to find a sponsor. Kavindu Udayanga Ranasinghe is also participating in extra curricular activities of the School such as Drama, Music and Kandyan dancing .
