Central Province RFU needs rugby promoters to develop the game

Much is expected from the new office bearers of the Central Province Rugby Football Union (CPRFU)? Every rugby lover is expecting a lot from the new committee rugby wise. So, the new committee should do its best to develop rugby. During the presidency of people like Lionel Almeida, Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte, Haren Costa, Maurice Perera, Trevor Nugawela, Iswan Omar ,. Mohan Samarakoon, Tuan Dole and Edwin Viper Gunaratne Snr. a good job was done and the results were recognized by the SLRFU.

The controlling body has to give the backing and support to keep up with the game, which they did in the past. The present committee should be capable of getting involved, this is where they should think of rugby promoters to be in the committee, who could help the CPRFU to be on its feet as before.

In the early days Central Province had their own referees association since 2000, In the good old days probably from which was started during the leadership of Y.C. Chang of SLRFU, the practice was for the CPRFU to organise the Clifford Cup Knockout tournament in Kandy in order to conduct a major tournament in the outstations to develop rugby from the other provinces at grassroot level, unfortunately this has not happened since 2010.

I can remember in 2009a Training Programme was held for over 250 School ruggerites under the age of 15years under the Sports Foundation sponsorship. They underwent a rugby training clinic at Nittawela organized by the CPRFU. This was one of the biggest ever junior coaching camps conducted by the CPRFU. Those in chargeof the programme were the Rugby Development officers from the CPRFU.

At one time the CPRFU was powerful when the SLRFU AGM comes. The people who were eligibile to vote at the CPRFU - AGM are only the Founder Members, Constituent Clubs and affiliated clubs as follows: - Founder Members: Kandy Sports Club, Dickoya MCC,Dimbulla A and CC, University of Peradeniya. Constituent Clubs were Kandy Youth Sports Club, Old Trinitians Sports Club, Katugastota Rugby Football Club, Old Anthonian’s Rugby Football Club, Matale Rugby Football Club. Then the affiliated Clubs were Old Rajans RFC, Katugastota Youth SC, Old Christ Church SC, Old Thomians RFC, Old Parakrama SC, Mapanawathura RFC, Nugawela RFC, Senkadagala RFC, Old Anthonians Egales, Old Vidyartha RFC, Old Kingswood RFC and Nuwara Eliya RFC

There was a Group Tour of Chennai (Madras) in association with the South India Rugby Football Union A rugby tournament for U/14 and U/16 was organized by the CPRFU from the 20th December to December 26, 2009. The tour party consisted of 75 players of age groups, two School Principals, three Staff members and Tour Manager. Rugby matches were played with the Chennai and Bangalore teams with the introduction of Beach rugby for the first time experienced by our players. Subsidized travel arrangements were made available by Maurice Travels - Travel agents for all airlines and tour operators.
