Antonian Sunil Fernando cricket coach par excellence

Sunil Fernando a high performance coach educator of Sri Lanka Cricket is a professional coach and one of Kandy’s high performance cricket coaches who was educated at St. Anthony’s College,He started off his school career as a basketball player but was recruited to play cricket because of his knowledge of cricket. Sunil who is the present north central province cricket coach of Sri Lanka cricket has given his best for the game and produced top cricketers who are doing well today. Sunil Fernando who was a Kandy, Central Zone Schools, Kandy Cricket Club and Old Antonian cricketer and at one time was the Provincial Cricket Coach for Central Province of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Known popularly as a medium pacer and an aggressive batsman for St. Anthony's College he has years of experience as a cricket coach starting from the junior level. He has coached St. Anthony's College junior and senior teams and has been Kandy District Coach and the Central Province coach before. He has also been the junior nationa cricket coach. Five of his products namely Ruwan Kalpage, Muttiah Muralitharan, Piyal Wijetunga Marlon Von Hagt and Kapila Wijegunawardena played for the national team. Even the dashing batsman Kumar Sangakkara used to go to Sunil Fernando cricket academy when he was playing for Trinity College for training from 13 years till the end of his career Sunil Fernando played for the Antonians in the years 1970 and 1971 and his coaches were top class cricketers like T.M.A. Cooray and Ben Nawaratne and his team captains were Merrill Gunaratne and Mahesh Gunathilake.Some of this team mates I can remember are Jayantha Monnekulame. He is one of the hardest working cricket coachesKandy has seen in bowling, fielding and batting. He wants to be a top coach and he works hard for that. At one time hewas a committee member of the Kandy District Cricket Association. He was Kandy District Coach and the Central Province coach. He has also been the junior national cricket coach for a few years at SLC...Under his guidance in year 2000 Sri Lanka under 17 national team won the Asia Cup championship in Pakistan . His Cricketing Qualifications. Level 1- B pass, Level 2- Distinction pass, Level 3- 4- Distinction pass,Level 1 Instructors course. His Coaching Assignments 1991-Thailand under 19 national team- BCCSL coach.
