Alms giving in memory of Sajith Mallikarachchi

Kandy’s rugby lovers held an arms giving on Friday at Mahiyawa in memory of former Isipathana College, Petersons SC, Kandy Sports Club and Sri Lanka ruggerite Sajith Mallikarachchi who died of a heart attack in 2016 at the age of 37.

Sajith as he was popularly called played for Kandy SC from 1999. In 2003 and 2006 he led the side. He turned out for Sri Lanka from 1997 to 2007. Under his captaincy Sri Lanka who were placed tenth in the Asian region shot upto fifth place.

Sajith was a member of the invincible Isipathana College team of 1996 and 1997 playing under his brother Bandula Mallikarachchi and Vajira Hewage. Isipathana were unbeaten in those two years winning every game they played.

Sajith was picked for the Sri Lanka pool while still at school. He played a few games of division rugby for Peterson SC before joining Kandy SC. He was renowned for his bruising tackles and powerful running.
