Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Jenson Button and even Sebastian Vettel are all members of a famous wall in Formula One, albeit not in a positive context.
All of the F1 title winners have crashed at the same final corner of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, which as a result has been named the ‘wall of champions.’
Lewis Hamilton though has a different wall to be remembered by, and in the Brit’s case is one any world champion would love to be associated with.
A new mural has been unveiled at Silverstone, depicting the Mercedes driver in front of the Union flag following his sixth world title this season.
The mural is placed at Farm Bridge on the circuit which is the home of the British Grand Prix.
Although the section of the circuit is no longer used by Formula One following its reconfiguration in 2010, it is still a section of the track which has seen all of the greats of F1 fly past over the years on its exit from the Abbey chicane.
Sky Sports F1, the home of live and exclusive F1 in the UK, commissioned the mural which was created by the artist James Cochran - who was behind the artwork for a similar mural for other British icons such as David Bowie and William Shakespeare. Cochran explained his thinking how he imagined Hamilton in the mural, saying: ‘For me its about capturing him as a sports champion but also his humility as a person and I hope I have captured that in his expression.’
Hamilton’s six world championships means he now only trails Michael Schumacher for the amount of world championships won.
In 2020 he will hope to win the title for a sixth time in seven seasons, equalling the record set by the F1 legend who claimed two titles with Benetton and five for Ferrari.
