Vidyarathana’s Rashmika and Sudarnila from Mullaitivu are best boxers

The majority of Youth girls came from Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Killinochchi and Jaffna Districts in the Northern Province. Thonej Rashmika of Vidyarathana University College, Horana and Sudan Sudarnila of Mudiyankattu Right Bank MV, Mullaitivu were adjudged the Best Boxers at the Youth Boys and Girls Boxing Championship for the General Jagath Jayasuriya Trophy worked off at the Jayathilaka Sports Complex in Nawalapitiya on Tuesday.

This meet was held concurrently with the Selection Trial Boxing Meet for Junior Boys and Girls to select boxers to participate in next month’s Asian Junior Boxing Championship to be held in Fujairah, UAE.

Rashmika, 18, a Stubbs and Youth championship winner last year, outpointed Dheerananda MV’s Pahasara in the Bantam weight final, displaying superb punching technique, slippery body movements, quick silver footwork and ringcraft to earn a unanimous decision. A southpaw, Rashmika scored with right hooks and left uppercuts and crosses against his rushing adversary.

Harendra Priyanath Walpola of Rajasinghe MV, Hanwella was declared the Best Loser in the Boys category after suffering a split decision against Southern Province Junior champion Tharinda Nethmina of Narandeniya MV in the Fly weight final. There was very little to choose between both pugilists who displayed sound technique and crisp punching skills, featuring in a closely contested yet clean bout.

Kingswood’s Rajapaksha bounced back after being floored in the dying seconds of the first round of the Light Fly weight to counter punch effectively against Vidyartha’s Hansaja and win by a split decision.

Trinity’s Miranga Subasinghe battled gamely against Sylvestrian Thenabadu in the Welter weight final though failing to cut the distance against his taller opponent but was dismayed when the referee stopped the contest midway in the last round.

A majority of the finals in the Youth girls category were lop-sided bouts, with only Sudarnila’s opponent N.A.T. Sandunika of Gamini CC BC going the distance in the Fly weight final. Sandunika was consoled with the Best Loser’s award after losing by a split points decision.

However, Pilimatalawa BC’s D.H.S.P. Jayarathna scored the only knock out of the day in the Light weight final when Sri Piyaratne MMV’s K.M.K. Nethranjali crumpled to the canvas in the second round and was out cold for several seconds before regaining her composure.
