Police pugilists Gayan Prabath Rathnasiri and Kaushalya Perera representing Kaluthara District were adjudged the best boxers at the Western Province Boxing Selection Trials for the 45th National Sports Festival held at the Vidyarathana University College Boxing Hall on Friday.

Ratnasiri, an outstanding product of Vidyarathana, won a split points decision against Army’s Jayalath in the Light Heavy weight final. A four-time Stubbs Shield champion and reigning national champion, the 22-year-old police constable displayed good technique and ringcraft to outpoint the rugged soldier in a closely contest bout.

Kaushalya, a 23-year-old Police woman constable continued her rise in the domestic arena by knocking down Dhammika Priyadarshani, also of Police, in the first round forcing her rival corner to throw in the towel in the second round of the women’s welter weight final. Best Boxer at the Intermediates meet and silver medallist at the Layton Cup, Kaushalya displayed sound technique to emerge as a top national contender. Both boxers were coached by Rusiru Indrajeewa at Police Training School in Kalutara.

Another Layton Cup silver medallist Shakila Madushka Bandara, 26, also scored an impressive win over Pavithra Jayakody in the women’s Middle weight final. Lance Corporal Jayasuriya Arachige Don Sampath representing Gampaha easily won his welter weight bout against Himaruwan of Colombo with the referee stopping the contest in round one.

National champion and Sri Lanka boxer Dinesh Maduranga, 32, gave a power packed performance to outclass Dilshan in the Middle weight final.
