Air Force’s Udayakumara representing Polonnaruwa District sparkled on the opening day of the North Central Province Boxing Selection Trials for the 45th National Sports Festival with a stunning knock out win at the National Sports Complex, Polonnaruwa on Monday.
A three-time runner-up at the National championships, Udayakumara sent his gutsy opponent Dinesh Kumara from Anuradhapura sprawling to the canvas inside the opening minute of the Welter (69kg) semifinal clash. Dinesh Kumara came out jabbing straight punches but Udayakumara staggered him with a combination before whipping in a perfectly timed right cross which floored his opponent who was motionless for a few seconds.
There was keen tussle in the Light weight (60kg) semifinal between Policeman Niroshan Sanjeewa Perera representing Polonnaruwa and a rugged fighter Sampath Lionel Perera also from Polonnaruwa.
Lanky Sanjeewa, 24, a constable, did his best to keep his distance from Sampath, an ex-soldier, who lunged forward almost leaping with left and right crosses. Sanjeewa appeared to be the better boxer and seemed to have tamed his rival who swung wildly but suffered a split points decision.
The women’s Light weight semfinal between Anuradhapura’s Priyangika and Polonnaruwa’s Sandupama was also closely contested. The 20-year-old Polonnaruwa lass making her debut finished strongly to win a split decision.
T. C. Hewa, District Sports Officer Polonnaruwa, inaugurated the meet which has been organized by Sports Officer Dharshana Bandaranayake.
