The 18 super bikes at the start line this year has proven to be one of the most competitive and unpredictable superbike championships witnessed in Sri Lankan racing.
The young Melwa rider Aaron Gunawardena who came into the 1000cc super bike racing last year set the benchmark high after beating elder brother Jaden Gunawardena, Pramuka Sesath, Maduranga Caldera, Shoel Daniel, Nadun Wijesekara and many more seasoned riders. He also set up a new lap record during qualifying at the Hutch Super series at Katukurunda last Sunday.
This year saw the return of many Maldivian riders and the development of many teams, not to mention the one make series by Honda and Yamaha that have drawn young blood to the sport. The delayed start to the 2019 race schedule and back to back gravel and tar events led to a decrease in the Super car entries, but as usual the “Three Shans” - Ashan, Ushan and Kushan put up a great show in the super car event over the weekend.
Besides the Gunawardena brothers who showed skillful riding and finished on the top notches of the podium in the 600cc, 900cc to 1000cc and the open event, the Daniel brothers, Nadun Wijesekara and Sangeeth Suriyage, and female rider Hansika showed off their skillful riding too and took top notches on the podium in their respective events.
