Veteran athlete Ranjan sets up three new records

Veteran athlete Ranjan Jayathilaka representing Sri Lanka Singers Association set up three new meet records in the 400m, 800m and 1500m events in the 75-80 age group category at the 6th Masters Athletics Sri Lanka Open Championship 2019 held at Sugathadasa Stadium on July 13 and 14.

The Masters Athletics Sri Lanka (MASL) organized this championship with the objective of selecting athletes for the Asian Masters Athletic Championship at Kuching, Malaysia from December 2 to 6, 2019.

Ranjan took part in men’s 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m events in his age group category and finished all the races as a champion with three new meet records.

Also he became the Best Athlete at the Masters Athletics Sri Lanka Championship organized by Kalutara District Sri Lanka Masters Athletics Association worked off at Bandaragama Grounds on August 3 and 4, 2019. Ranjan obtained four gold medals which he participated in 200m, 400m, 800m and1500m events

Ranjan served 20 years as an Inspector of Police Department in Criminal Record Division and he has actively contributed to bring glory to his division in cricket, rugby and soccer matches. After his retirement he turned to athletics underthe instructions of Mrs. Durga Hopeman since last year. Ranjan represented the Sri Lanka Veterans Athletic team in the World Master’s Championship which was conducted in Malaga City, Spain in September last year under Mrs. Durga’s guidance.

Ranjan is an old boy of St. Joseph’s College, Gampola and he started his sporting career at a tender age. He recorded various victories in his school days in sports activities.
