Hiruni Wijeratne will be the star attraction at the 97th National Athletics Championships which will get underway today at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
The US-based athlete is the first Sri Lankan to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in Doha in the marathon and is competing in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races during the three-day championships which has attracted 633 entries.
Wijeratne will be seen in action on Saturday at 7.00 a.m. in the Women’s 10,000m final and on Sunday in the Women’s 5,000m race commencing at 7.15 a.m.
This meet will serve as the final trial to select the Sri Lanka athletic team for the South Asian Games scheduled to be held in December in Nepal in addition to the IAAF World Athletics Championships to be held in Doha in September, according to the G.L.S. Perera, vice president of the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka.
Today’s scheduled will kick-off with the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase final at 7.15 a.m. and conclude with the Women’s 1,500m final scheduled for 5.15 p.m.
