Grace period for SLC to reply to forensic report ends today

Sports Minister Harin Fernando yesterday said the grace period of a fortnight, granted by the Sports Ministry for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to respond to the forensic audit report expires today.

In case they fail to respond inside the deadline, it would be sent to the Attorney General (AG) after which, it would be tabled in Parliament and, later become a public document.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) chief Shashank Manohar will be arriving in Sri Lanka and with his concurrence, we’ll be appointing a four-member committee, including an official from the cricket’s global body to look into the TV rights. As a minister, I can issue directions,” the Sports Minister said at a media conference yesterday.

Commenting on the Pakistan tour, which had been on the horizon, the minister announced that Sri Lanka is likely to play three one-dayers in Pakistan, and the two Test matches in the UAE.

He also went on to say that SLC had committed a mistake in not renewing the contracts of spin bowling coach Piyal Wijetunge and batting coach Lanka de Silva.

Regarding the contract of former Sri Lanka coach Chandika Haturusingha, the minister said, “The legal teams of SLC are now in the process of renegotiating and I will get the details, in another couple of days. I’ve advised the cricket board, to re-advertise wherever, contracts have expired.”

“I’m glad I have done the needful for the sports, despite threats made against me. We are the only country to have established an anti-corruption unit for the sport when neighbouring nations like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan have not,” the minister said.
