Chathurya topples top seed Thehan to clinch Under 16 singles title

Girls under-16 singles finalist, Oshini & Boys’ U-16 singles champion Chathurya Nilaweera

Second seed Chathurya Nilaweera of Stafford International School created a major upset toppling top seed Thehan Wijemanne in a thrilling three setter final 7/5, 4/6, 6/0 in the under-16 boys’ singles event of the 104th National Tennis Championship continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) hard courts yesterday.

Chathurya has maintained an undefeated record in the event and beat Zaidh Zihar 7/5, 6/0 in semifinals and went on to defeat Wenuka Kithnula 6/2, 6/0 in quarters.

Thehan was the fancied candidate for the title, but was unable to keep momentum as his opponent Chathurya came up with a superb display. Thehan bounced back strongly in the second set following a closely contested first set defeat where he was tamed by Chathurya (7/5) and won the second set handing a shock defeat to Chathurya (4/6). But the third set saw Chathrya dominating the set from the beginning and sealed his victory as Thehan failed to put up any resistance. Chathurya left no room to his opponent and won the third set in style without conceding a single point to Thehan (6/0).

Meanwhile Oshini Herath from British College entered the under-16 girls’ singles final when she beat Dewmini Warnasuriya in easy straight set semifinal 6/1, 6/1 yesterday. Oshini is in fine form and will meet the winner of today’s second semifinal between Tharani Alexendra of Visakha Vidyalaya and Tania Doloswala of Gateway College, Colombo. Earlier Oshini edged out Tuwini de Alwis 6/2, 7/6(2) in a closely contested quarterfinal.

Tania had the better of Sethmi Sumanaweera 6/4, 6/1 while Tharani defeated Prithika Chandramohan 1/6, 6/3, 6/2 in quarterfinal battles.
