Bhanuka scores century but Lanka ‘A’ face defeat

HUBLI, Sunday - Bhanuka Rajapaksa hit a powerful century 110 off 112 balls with 17 fours and three sixes but it may not be enough to save Sri Lanka ‘A’ from defeat in the second unofficial 4-day cricket test against India ‘A’ being played at Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.

Facing a tall target of 430 runs to scale Sri Lanka ‘A’ ended the third day shakily at 210 for seven with Rajapaksa being the only top order batsman to score any runs.

Kamindu Mendis batting at number seven is the only other batsman to make over 20 in a disappointing Sri Lanka batting card.

Mendis was unbeaten on 33 but has only the tail to support him as Sri Lanka still require 220 runs with three wickets in hand.

Earlier India ‘A’ resuming their second innings at 216-6 went onto reach an impressive 372 to put the pressure back on Sri Lanka who were frustrated by a 123-run eighth wicket stand between 19-year-old Rahul Chahar (84) and Jayant Yadav (53).

India lead the series 1-0 and if they win this test will take the series.

Scores:

India ‘A’ 269 and 372 (82.2) (o/n 216/6) (R Chahar 84, J Yadav 53, Vishwa Fernando 3/68, Lakshan Sandakan 3/87)

Sri Lanka ‘A’ 212 and 210-7 (51 overs) at close (Bhanuka Rajapaksa 110, Kamindu Mendis 33 n.o., S Dube 2/25, R Chahar 3/73)
