Steps taken to increase income of Samurdhi recipients

‘Steps will be taken to increase the monthly income of Samurdhi recipients throughout the country and rescue them from their dependence mentality. In future, people in the village themselves will be empowered to select 25 Samurdhi families from their area,’ Labour, Trade Union Relations and Social Empowerment Minister Daya Gamage said.

The Minister was addressing a meeting attended by Samurdhi Development Department officials to discuss the proposed programme to develop the production of imported food items with a production potential at the Ministry auditorium on January 8.

The Minister who emphasised the need to appreciate the services of Samurdhi Development Officers who had empowered a large number of Samurdhi recipients, directed the Director General of the Department to present special awards to a batch of 150 efficient Samurdhi Development Officers by selecting six from each district.

He also directed the Director General to submit him a report in this regard within the next week. He also asked Development Officers to empower 10 selected families from each Grama Niladhari Division who had directed them to develop a systematic programme to reduce the import of goods and increase exports.

Petroleum Resources Development Deputy Minister Anoma Gamage, Monitoring Parliamentarian Dr. Thusitha Wijemanne, Ministry Additional Secretary Saman Udawatte and other Ministry and Department officials were also present on the occasion.
