Trust all is well and shipshape in sunny Sri, as we shift our attention to matters rugby and project our minds to what our future holds for this oval discipline?
I rather we accepted realities on the ground, admit to the current standard of progress versus the actual population of players, actively involved and learning skills that shape their future.
On the upside we can claim our fair share of bragging rights about the growing demand and huge popularity of our school rugby at all levels.
Fact - rugby at schools is the most popular sport and definitely the biggest following.
If we clock up the upcoming season’s demands ...for the 1st squad, plus full operations for 2019 many will hang their heads in disbelief.
The budgets bedazzle at a couple of million per school for the smaller stables, to anything up to a cool 30m+ to deliver this season...
Remarkable phenomenon given the current economic climate and forecast.
Meeting the compulsive demands to maintain a smooth passage through the months ahead ...is index linked to the team’s performance in the middle and pressure to keep winning.
Management have to consistently keep the player environment as competitive as possible, with injury and nutrition high priority on their wish list...that absorbs the entire season at home and away.
The Singer schools rugby league is the most anticipated and easily the most popular sport in Sri...average of 3 to 5 thousand per match. Flags/banners, Sri flags, team/school mementos etc.
For our country’s reputation to grow and a shot upwards into the unknown murky waters of World Rugby....need a solution that raises the question on everyone’s lips.
In 7s specific, very much the lean mean fighting machine of our code dominating the current atmosphere.
The IRBs grand designs to control the earth’s core centres around creation of a few superheroes for 7s, USA or the Eagles have had the most impact with successfully recruiting 2 ex-Olympic class sprinters Carlyn Ayles and Perry Baker.
What a nightmare for defences to mark two channels that are automatic finishers and pure gold with ball in hand.
What a phenomenal success for the USA to win a World series final...and the likes of Kenya, Portugal, and Argentina very much on radar for a staggering World Cup this year followed by the Olympics next year.
At home in sunny Sri, Kandy the defending league champions, nudged past an inspired Navy XV at their cauldron.
Only a last minute penalty saved them.
Last week Army played all 80mins and defended their line at all cost against Kandy at Nittawella for a stunning win, completely against the run of play and totally against the odds.
Excellent for the weeks ahead when the Havelocks play them under lights at sea level and Martis to drive the park boys to even up the 1st round loss.
Similarly when Kandy play CH & FC at the Racecourse...expectations will be off the conventional radar.
Maitland Crescent finally after much work especially their boiler house 8, outplayed CR by a decent 30 points and Sam bullseye Maduwantha kicking himself to no. 1 on the points table. His boots bisecting the uprights past a 100+ points and also knocking Tarinda Ratwatte off the top slot.
The league title will loom larger than life if Kandy lose again...and I suspect the Maitland marauders or the Park rangers to outwit on the day in our city by the sea.
It’s definitely tons to look forward to ...all hail our island warriors for maximum impact and some breathtakingly beautiful balance pace and agility to finish.
Bula bula to all who are family to our warriors.
Aloha islanders!
