Nadun Punchihewa created a major upset when he beat Hasitha Chanaka in the men's open quarter finals of the SSC open Badminton championships which is now in progress at SSC Indoor stadium and Mercantile Badminton courts . It was the seventh day of this annual tournament organised by the SSC Badminton section led by Secretary Gamini Jayasuriya the former Mercantile Badminton Association President
The quarter finals of the men's singles yesterday saw the only upset being recorded by 19 year old Nadun Punchihewa when he defeated 8th seeded player Hasitha Chanaka in two straight sets 21/15, 21/18 .
Men's singles top seed Ranthushka Sasindu the National runner up had an easy two sets 21/17, 21/9 win against Sethum Perera to enter the semi finals while 17 year old St Peter's College Bambalapitiya player Viren Netthasinghe also had a tough competition against Rohan Pathmakumara to enter the semi final 21/15, 21/14.
Maduka Dulanjana also made a good fight to beat Chiran Sudeera to enter the semi finals 21/19,/21/15.
Meanwhile in the women's open quarter finals all the seeded players qualified to play in the semi finals today.
Top seed Dilmi Dias from Our Lady of Victories Moratuwa entered the semi final by defeating Panchali Adhikari 21/12, 21/14. Former National champion experienced Chandrika de Silva once again excelled in this tournament defeating Meedum Keerthisiri 21/11, 21/18 . Former National player Nadeesha Gayanthi defeated Manudi Mithara 21/15, 21/11 to enter the semi finals while bottom seed player Hasara Wijeratna beat Gayana Pieris in straight sets 21/15, 21/10 to enter the semi finals.
All the semi finals of this tournament both junior age categories and open events are scheduled to be played today while the grand finals will be held tomorrow at the SSC courts followed by the awards ceremony
Tommy Ellawala the President of the SSC will be the chief guest on the final day 27th Sunday and winners and runners up will receive trophies
