Kasun and Gayanthika win Cross Country Marathon

The winner of the Cross Country Marathon, Kasun Tharanga, receiving the medal, certificate and the cash award from Brigadier P.A. Kaluarachchi of the Army Volunteer Force Headquarters.

The Cross Country Marathon which was organised by the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) was successfully concluded at the Nuwara Eliya Race Course Grounds on Friday .

The event was conducted on a grand scale, under the supervision of the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Rukmal Dias VSV USP ndc psc

Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force ,Major General Rukmal Dias graced the occasion as the Chief Guest on the invitation of Major General L F Kasthuriarachchi Deputy Commandant of the Sri. Lanka Army Volunteer Force.

In line with the championship, an open race was conducted with the participation of athletes representing Sri Lanka Navy and other sports clubs throughout the Island. The occasion was witnessed by a large gathering comprising of the invitees from public sector and police. The military invitees included Senior Officers of the Head Quarters of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. 112 Brigade Commander, Commandant of the Volunteer Force Training School, Colonels Coordinating Officer, Liaison Officers, Civil Affairs Officers, Commanding Officers of the battalions and the staff of the HQSLAVF.

The Championship drew a large number of athletes representing the regiments. Certificates ,trophies and the Cash Prizes were given away by Major General Rukmal Dias and Major General L F Kasthuriarachchi,

Major General Rukmal Dias gave away a souvenir to the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club in appreciation of its kind gesture and the facilitation extended to the SLAVF for successful completion of the event. It was received by Rohan Perera the Secretary of the Club. Major General L F Kasthuriarachchi presented a souvenir to the Chief Guest of the event, Major General Rukmal Dias to mark the maiden event.

Women First place - Gayanthika Thusari (Time 39.31) Second place - UKN Rathnayake (Time 39.41) Third place - SA Lamahewa (Time 39.58)

Winners of the Open Championship -

Men First place - A Kasun Tharanga (Time 33.20) Second place - GNGSR Wijewickrama (Time 33.30) Third place - TM Eranda (Time 33.45)

The SLAVF Cross-country Championship which is conducted with a view of promoting and inculcating sportsmanship among the Army personnel will be an annual feature in the sports calendar.
