Jananuwani creates major upset

Jananuwani de Alwis created a major upset when she beat Nadara Gunawardena in the girls under 19 quarter final at the SSC open Badminton championships which is now in progress at SSC Indoor Stadium and Mercantile Badminton courts.

Jananuwani the unseeded shuttler from Visakha College Colombo had to make fight hard to enter the under 19 semi finals.Jananuwani lost the first set 15/21 but she fought back strongly to win second and third sets 21/17,21/11 over third seed Nadara Gunawardena.

Top seed of the under 19 girls singles Dilmi Dias of Our Lady Victories College Moratuwa had an easy two straight sets over Keshani Attanayake of Lyceum International College 21/8,21/7 to enter the semi finals while fourth seed Gayana Pieris of Vidura College Nugegoda defeated Fathima Ilma of KandyGirls High School 21/10,21/4 in the quarter finals.Anurangi Hansamali the bottom seed had an easy two straight set win over Raveeshiya Jayaweera of Lyceum 21/11,21/9 to enter the under 19 semi finals which will be played on January 26 Saturday followed by finals on January 27 Sunday.

Meanwhile Dumindu Abeywickrama of Royal partnered with Menura de Alwis of D.S Senanayake College Colombo the top seed pair won the boys under 17 doubles quarter final when they beat Lehan Andrahennadi and Kaviru Sanjith two straight sets 21/17,21/18 while Sethum Perera and Shavinka Weerasekara outclassed Kavisha Abeysinghe and Himal Perera 21/9,21/17.

Thenuka de Silva partnered with Viren Nettasinghe defeated Chalith Kumarapperuma and Maleesha Kumarasinghe 21/15,21/16 while other quarter final Madubhanu Kariyawasam and Oshamika Karunaratna beat Glen Gomes and Chamith Nimantha. 21/11,21/16

Due to more entries at this tournament most of the days tournament matches are scheduled to play until 10pm but the tournament is very competitive at both venues SSC courts and Mercantile courts said chief referee Samantha Nawaratna.SSC Badminton organizers led by Secretary Gamini Jayasuriya always do good job to success this tournament .

Today (23) fifth day of the tournament open men and women singles first round matches,under 17 girls first and second rounds,open men’s doubles matches are scheduled to play at the SSC courts while under 15 and under 13 girls singles and doubles, over 40 women’s singles and family mixed doubles matches are scheduled to played at the Mercantile Badminton courts .The finals will be played at 27thSunday at SSC courts.
